The New Mexico State Fair Junior Livestock Sale

Who Is In The Sale:

4H and FFA students/members from around the state enter their animals in the State Fair Livestock Show and the top animals in each class make it to the sale. Each year there are between 120 and 125 animal entries in the sale.

All Buyers Receive:

1) Lunch prior to the sale
2) Fair entry the day of the sale
3) Parking
4) Invitation to Post Sale Event

Buying Options:

1) Purchase an animal on your own
2) Add-on to a particular entry or disburse add-on evenly among all participates.
3) Contribute to NMJLF for a joint venture or donate to the NMJLF for purchasing an animal or for a scholarship

How The Sale Works:

Each participant and his/her animal are brought into the sale ring. The auctioneer begins the bidding and it continues until he determines the successful bidder. The bidding price is per pound per head. For example, if an animal weighs 100 lbs. (weights will be provided prior to sale) and the purchase price is $1.50/lbs. then the total cost of the animal is $150.00. Each successful bidder will be honored by having their name announced. Then they will be escorted to have their picture taken with the seller and purchased animal. Each buyer will have four options:

(1) To have the animal processed, which means the packer will take the animal to their facility with your processing instructions.

(2) The second option is to donate the animal to charity. You designate a charity on the purchase slip and note if you or the charity will pay for processing the animal.

(3) Option three is to sell the animal to the packer for the packer bid price (packer price will be deducted from the purchase
price.) The bid sheet will have the animal’s weight and the packer bid already calculated.

(4) The final option is to pick up the animal and take it home.

Additional Information:

Dairy heifers are not for consumption. If the dairy cow is not needed, you can take the dairy associations’ bid, which is also listed on the sale sheet. Joint ventures are when one or more buyers team up and purchase an animal. Together you have the same options and all buyers’ names will be announced.
